My Philosophy

High Information, Low Intervention

We have lengthy appointments with each other not just to make sure that you and baby are happy and healthy, but also to establish a strong relationship with one another.

The clinical tasks (listening to baby's heartbeat, performing any tests you might need or request, and taking your vitals) typically only take up a few minutes of our appointment time. The rest of our time is spent on educational topics and talking about life.

I make sure that you understand the how's and why's of everything. Midwifery care is about empowering you to make your own educated decisions, and providing evidence-based information to help you make those choices. I consider myself to be a guide, not a gatekeeper.

Letting Baby Out vs. Getting Baby Out

I believe in letting birth unfold naturally, on its own timetable. I will work to create a space that is safe, calming, and peaceful so that your body can do its work as easily and efficiently as possible. You will focus on breathing, relaxing your muscles rather than tensing them against the waves of contractions, and eating and drinking as needed to stay strong during the duration of your labor.

In an undisturbed birth, the cervix isn't checked repeatedly throughout labor (often it is never checked at all). Baby will spin and descend, and your body will soften and open. Once baby reaches just the right spot, the fetal ejection reflex is triggered, and your uterus will start involuntarily pushing baby down and out without you even trying. Your job at that time is to hang on, breathe slowly and deeply, and try not to add to the intensity by intentionally bearing down. Your body will do it for you. I will remind you of your breath, remind you not to push, and give you encouragement.

This is letting baby out, and it's magical.

Not every birth can happen this way, but most can with a little patience and the correct environment.
